KUCHING, 20 January 2017 – Piasau Nature Reserve (PNR) is set to undergo major transformation as works to develop a state-of-the-art Visitor Centre Complex at the Nature Reserve had recently commenced. This was announced at a symbolic handing-over ceremony yesterday at SARAWAK FORESTRY Corporation (SFC) Corporate Office in Kuching between SFC and Technicorps Builder Sdn Bhd (Technicorps), the main Project Contractor. At the ceremony, SFC and Technicorps formally entered into a Contract for the renovation, extension and reinstatement of associated infrastructure works related to the development of the Visitor Centre Complex. These works are concentrated within Zone 3 of PNR to improve facilities for the promotion of education and use of the Nature Reserve.
This RM 5 million project is expected to be completed in February 2018. The Visitor Centre Complex would house PNR’s administration office, visitor centre, exhibition gallery, gift shop, cafeteria, conference centre etc. The complex is built on the site of the former Tenby International School building, located within Zone 3 of the Gensler’s Masterplan for PNR. This project represents the first phase of a restoration and development initiative at PNR for which Shell and PETRONAS had each contributed RM 5 million.
The Gensler’s Masterplan incorporates site restoration and the development of a Visitor Centre Complex at PNR based on a zoning system. Zone 1 would be designated as a conservation zone out of bounds to the general public. Zone 2 would be accessible to the public for outdoor activities whereas Zone 3 would comprise facilities for conservation and educational activities.
The Visitor Centre Complex would serve as a one-stop information centre that will showcase the story of Piasau Nature Reserve (past and present), its biodiversity and the natural assets it has to offer. Through the availability of an outdoor learning facility, which is the natural environment of the Nature Reserve itself and an indoor learning facility provided by the Visitor Centre, learning experience for nature lovers and visitors to Piasau Nature Reserve will be greatly enhanced.
In conjunction with this development project, SFC would like to alert the Miri public of the closure of designated construction area within Zone 3 at PNR during the construction period.
